Rye |
The History of Rye Rye an ancient town has had an adventurous history
being right on the south coast, mainly known as a Cinque port that contributed 5 ships to
the King. As you enter the town of Rye you might notice road signs with the date 1289,
this stands to represent the year in which Rye was made a Royal borough. Disaster struck
Rye in 1377 when the French launched a series of attacks on the south coast making Rye
their main target. They succeeded in their attack and burnt the town to the ground; the
town did recover although it has been said that Rye never regained its former status.
Although it did regain its royal status in a way as Queen Elizabeth I visited Rye 1573 and
was so pleased that she allowed the town to be called Rye Royal.
Sojourn's View Rye is enchanting set upon a hill you can walk up the cobble streets to see some lovely houses. The main high street is on the lower level of the town, but I think that you have to explore Rye to see the idyllic setting and walk along the cobbled streets. you must also visit the fine church which has a very interesting clock. Sets within the winding streets of the old town of Rye there are small quaint shops that sell china and jam. These shops give the impression of a typical old fashioned British shop. Also throughout the streets are several pubs, these make a drink perfect, a British pub in a great location. |
