The History of Smallhythe

Although it is actually called Smallhythe the village is also known as Ellen Terry. This is down to the fact that the famous Shakespearean actress Ellen Terry lived in the house originally known as Smallhythe Place. But now a-days it is known as the Ellen Terry Museum, hence the village being referred to as Ellen Terry.
Smallhythe once the ancient harbour to Tenterden and  a shipbuilding centre, and was even visited by King Henry VIII to inspect a warship that was being built during 1538.
